Cooking together as a date night (2 easy recipes)
"We want a date night but we're broke, tired, or out of sitters. Dinner at home just feels like dinner." Cooking together is different from cooking for two. You're a team, you're touching, and if you pick something new, it's a little adventure.
What the research says
A large German study of more than 12,000 people and their partners found that couples who share more meals report higher relationship satisfaction and life satisfaction, though it shows a link, not proof that meals cause it (Appetite, University of Mannheim). Arthur Aron's research found that doing something new together raises relationship satisfaction more than routine activities (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2000). So make it a recipe neither of you has made, and make it together.
How to make it a date, not dinner
- Ask like it's a date. Say "friday, 8pm, you and me are making pasta from scratch. i'll get everything."
- Shop and prep the boring parts ahead. Kids fed and down, dishes done, ingredients out.
- Set the room. Music she likes, a candle, a drink for each of you.
- Split the jobs. One of you is the chef, the other is the sous chef. Swap next time.
- Flirt while you cook. Arms around her at the stove, a taste off the spoon, a kiss on the shoulder while she stirs. Then back to work.
- Eat at the table. Real plates, phones in another room. Say "okay, rate it out of ten. be honest."
Recipe 1. Lemon garlic shrimp pasta (25 minutes, serves 2)
- You'll need. Half a box of spaghetti, about 12 shrimp peeled, 4 cloves garlic, 1 lemon, a big pat of butter, olive oil, a handful of parsley, red pepper flakes, parmesan, salt and pepper.
- Job one. Boil salted water, cook the spaghetti, save a mug of pasta water before you drain it.
- Job two. Slice the garlic, zest and juice the lemon, chop the parsley.
- Together. Olive oil and garlic in a big pan on medium for a minute. Add shrimp, salt and pepper, a pinch of pepper flakes, 2 minutes a side until pink. Add butter, lemon juice and zest. Toss in the pasta with a splash of pasta water. Parsley and parmesan on top.
Recipe 2. Make your own flatbread pizzas (20 minutes, serves 2)
- You'll need. 2 store bought naan or flatbreads, pizza or marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella, and toppings you each pick (pepperoni, mushrooms, basil, hot honey, whatever).
- Job one. Heat the oven to 425F. Prep the toppings.
- Job two. Build the pizzas. Each of you makes one for the other. That's the fun part.
- Together. Bake on a sheet pan 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese bubbles. Cut, swap bites, judge each other's pizza.
Do and don't
- Don't take over or correct her knife skills. You're on the same team.
- Do clean as you go so the kitchen isn't a crime scene after.
- Don't pick something with 22 steps. Easy is the point.
- Check allergies and what she actually likes before you pick the menu. Shrimp swap is chicken.
You'll know it's working if
She's laughing at the stove. She's stealing bites. She wants to do it again with a new recipe. The kitchen dancing happens without anyone planning it.
If it isn't
If she's stressed in the kitchen, give her the fun job (building the pizzas, picking the music) and you handle the heat. If she just doesn't like cooking, keep the idea and switch the activity, novelty dates has plenty of others.
Texts you can send
friday 8pm. you and me, lemon shrimp pasta, i got everything
kids down by 7:30. chef or sous chef, your pick
tonight we make each other pizzas and the loser does dishes
A woman's read
Cooking with a guy is low key one of the most flirty things you can do. You're bumping into each other, he's tasting off my spoon, we're both a little bad at it. It feels like a date without the bill. What makes it work is him setting it up like a date, music, candle, everything bought, so it isn't just another night I'm making dinner.
The move
Pick one of the two recipes, buy everything, and ask her for a specific night. Then set the room like it's a date, because it is.
