First date ideas in Chicago
Chicago gives you two different cities, summer and winter. The list below has both, so you're covered whatever the lake is doing. Everything was open this year, but places change, check hours before you go.
The low-key drink
- Best Intentions (Logan Square, on Armitage). A neighborhood cocktail bar that ended up on national best bar lists in 2026 and still feels relaxed. Text her: "drinks at best intentions in logan square thursday? easy and very good"
The walk and talk
- The 606 (Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square). An old elevated rail line turned into a trail. Walk a stretch and drop down for food. Text her: "walk the 606 with me saturday then we find tacos"
Cheap and cute
- Lincoln Park Zoo (Lincoln Park). Always free, right by the lake, and animals do the talking for you. Text her: "lincoln park zoo sunday? i want to see which animal you are"
- Big Star (Wicker Park, Damen Ave). Tacos and a big patio, with a walk-up window when the line is long. Text her: "tacos at big star after work friday? patio if it's nice"
The activity date
- The Green Mill (Uptown). A jazz club from the Capone days with live music every night. The weekend late sets run into the early morning. Text her: "live jazz at the green mill saturday. capone used to drink there, very romantic"
The rainy day
- Art Institute of Chicago (Grant Park). Wander for an hour, pick favorites, argue about them. Text her: "art institute sunday? you show me your favorite painting and i'll show you mine"
- Garfield Park Conservatory (East Garfield Park). A huge glass house full of tropical plants. Warm in February, which is the whole point. Book a timed visit. Text her: "it's freezing. garfield park conservatory saturday? it's basically a tropical vacation"
The impress-her dinner
- Girl and the Goat (West Loop, Randolph St). Stephanie Izard's place. Book the dining room, or the bar takes walk-ins. Text her: "i got us a table at girl and the goat friday. you in?"

A woman's read
In Chicago, the weather is the plan. If you invite her on a walk in January, she'll think you didn't think. If you invite her to a tropical greenhouse in January, she'll think you're charming. Same effort, totally different read. Check the forecast before you text.
The move
Check the forecast. Warm, pick The 606 or the zoo. Cold, pick the conservatory or the Art Institute. Text her a day and time, and keep the Green Mill for a later date.
Before you go
Places change, check hours before you go. Girl and the Goat is the one to book. If it's winter, keep one indoor option ready. Need help starting the conversation? Here are first date conversation topics.
Tell Val about her and she'll plan the whole night.
