First date ideas in Houston
Houston is big and spread out, so the best first date here keeps you in one neighborhood. Montrose and the Museum District do most of the work below. I picked places that were open this year, but places change, check hours before you go.
The low-key drink
- Anvil Bar and Refuge (Montrose, on Westheimer). The bar that started Houston's cocktail scene, and still one of the best in the country. Order off their list of classics and let her pick. Text her: "anvil thursday? they have a list of 100 classic cocktails and i need a second opinion"
The walk and talk
- Buffalo Bayou Park (between Shepherd and downtown). Trails along the water with the skyline in front of you. Go near sunset. Text her: "buffalo bayou walk at sunset saturday, then we find food"
The activity date
- Pedal boats at Hermann Park (Museum District). Pedaling around the lake together is a little silly, and silly is good. Text her: "pedal boats at hermann park sunday. i promise to do most of the pedaling"
Cheap and cute
- Axelrad (Midtown, Alabama St). A beer garden with hammocks, picnic tables and live music some nights. Low pressure, very easy to stay longer. Text her: "hammocks and beer at axelrad friday? very low effort very good vibes"
The rainy day
- The Menil Collection (Montrose). Admission is always free, the building is calm, and the grounds around it are pretty when the rain stops. Text her: "rainy saturday plan. the menil, then coffee nearby?"
- Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Museum District). Huge, and the permanent collection is free on Thursdays. Text her: "mfah thursday after work? i want to see what you think is overrated"
The impress-her dinner
- Xochi (downtown, inside the Marriott Marquis). Hugo Ortega's Oaxacan place, known for its moles. Feels special without being stiff. Text her: "i got us a table at xochi friday. you like mole?"
The late-night bite
- House of Pies (Upper Kirby, on Kirby Dr). A Houston classic for pie after a night out, open until midnight at this location. Text her: "it's not over until we get pie at house of pies"

A woman's read
In a city this spread out, the thing she'll notice is whether you made it easy. Pick somewhere close to her side of town or meet in the middle, and keep the second stop a few minutes away. A first date that needs two long drives feels like an errand. One that flows from a drink to a walk to pie feels like a night.
The move
Pick one neighborhood, choose two spots in it, and text her the first one with a day and time. Save the second for when it's going well.
Before you go
Places change, check hours before you go. Xochi is the one to book. Anvil gets busy on weekends, so earlier is better. Want a backup plan for conversation? Try these first date conversation topics.
Tell Val about her and she'll plan the whole night.
