Simone on this one
She says she's fine, but she's not
You asked what's wrong. She said "I'm fine." Her voice said otherwise, and so did the way she put the dishes away. You wish she would just tell you. Here's why she won't, yet, and what to do instead.
Why she says fine
Usually because explaining feels like more work than it's worth. She's mentioned the thing before, maybe twice, and it didn't land. Or she's tired and doesn't want a whole conversation tonight. "Fine" is her saying "I don't have the energy to teach this again."
Don't do these
- Don't say "ok" and walk away. That proves the point.
- Don't push with "just tell me what I did."
- Don't bring it up for the first time at 11pm in bed.
- Don't answer with a big gesture. Flowers don't fix the thing she mentioned twice.
What actually works
Think back a week. What did she mention more than once? The thing with her mom, the work deadline, the shelf in the hallway. Handle that, all the way, without asking her what to do. Then ask about her day like you want the real answer, and listen to the whole thing.
Texts you can send
thinking about you. how did the thing with your boss go
called the landlord about the sink. its fixed thursday. one less thing
you seemed off last night. no pressure, i just want to know how youre doing
dinner is on me tonight. you pick the place, i handle the rest
A woman's read
When I say "I'm fine," I'm usually not, but I also don't want to have to explain it. What gets through to me is when he remembers the thing I said last week and just handles it. No list, no asking me what to do. Then when he asks about my day, I actually want to tell him.
The move
Pick one thing she mentioned more than once this week. Handle it today, completely, without asking her how. Then ask about her day and listen.
If it keeps happening
If "I'm fine" is every week now, the issue is bigger than one night. Pick a calm weekend morning, not after a fight, and say what you've noticed without blaming her. More on reading the words in what does I'm fine mean.
Questions guys ask
What does it mean when she says she is fine but she is not?
Often that she has mentioned something before and does not have the energy to explain it again.
Should I keep asking what is wrong?
Not over and over. Handle something she mentioned, then ask once, calmly, and listen.
How do I get her to open up?
Show you remembered what she said, take something off her plate, and ask about her day when things are calm.
